Get Smart Review!

Get Smart Review!

In the movie ‘Get Smart’, Maxwell Smart of a U.S spy agency called control investigates killings of their agents with agent 99, his partner. Control is supposedly ‘non-existant’ after the defeat of KAOS, but KAOS lives on. Smart and Agent 99 get information tracking down a man named Siegfried, the head of KAOS, who has put bombs throughout America. Can Max and agent 99 stop him before he wins?

The get smart movie is an interesting, and sometimes funny, adaptation of the old series. There were many great references to the old series like the old ‘shoe-phone’ and the quote ‘missed it by that much!’. It also had all those old classic characters like Maxwell Smart, Agent 99 and a cameo by the Hymie character at the end.

There were many recognizable and incredibly wonderful actors taking part in this film. Some names to mention are Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson and Patrick Warburton, to name a few! I have seen, as a kid so I am a little rusty on it, a bit of the old series and Steve did an okay job of taking on this role but it didn’t take. Especially since we are so used to seeing him in big, important and actually smart roles like a newsman and congressman in the ‘Almighty’ movies, we just aren’t used to seeing him trying to do a role like that!

What makes up for the insanely good, and at the same time, bad casting and acting is the brilliant special effects and the fight scenes that make the movie the climactic thing it is. I also feel that the writing is a good point for the movie as I really enjoyed the plot line and quotes from the movie! Especially with the character twist in the end, the characters are so well written that you would have never have guessed it!

Get smart is a good film for family or fans or even anyone that wants to get acquainted with the franchise. But I would less recommend the movie for people who are less farmiliar with the franchise because of all the old references and stuff.

I give Get Smart 6½ / 10

Stand By Me and Newsy Stuff!

June 24th, 2008

Just a point, I have been having lots of late minute work to do so, I will have the site completely updated by the time it is Friday/Saturday. Also, I am having a 3 week brake from school because Australia is better than America. But, since you wont have a comic for a few days, enjoy this Review of “Stand By Me” I did:

Stan By Me Review By Ben Wilson

Stand by me is directed by Rob Reiner. Rob has been an actor, writer, producer and director for many films and TV shows. Stand by me also has a wonderful cast that was carefully and nicely picked out such as Wil Wheaton and river phoenix and many other great cast members.

A big part of stand by me makes it an adventure type film. But, at times I feel like it is a mystery, especially with the flashbacks of Gordy and stories of the dead boy.

4 boys set of on an adventure to find the dead body of a boy who had gone missing but the boys were going to find, but they knew he was hit by a train and had the life knocked out of him. On their journey they run away from trains, survive a leech-fest, getting chased by a dog, talk about things important to 12 yr olds before they discover girls. They even fought each other at times. But in the end they got through it because even though once school went back they all just went their separate ways, they had been the best of friends for a time and it was wonderful to see that that is what can be possible for a group of 12 year olds.

There are many great techniques, themes, effects and things that actually make the film unique. For example, when they are running away from the train they filmed the train and the filmed the boys running away from Rob(Director) and merged the two. That was a wonderful technique and effect that I found interesting.

In the end of the film where they get to the body but so do the older boys which are with a gang of about 6 tough guys. Even after being threatened by the main guy of the gang, Ace, Chris (River) stands up for the body and says “you are not taking him!”. He wouldn’t budge. When Chris is about to get terribly attacked by ace, Gordy (Wil) grabs the gun they had stashed for a moment like this and does something completely unexpected! He stands up to a big, tough bully who could actually kill him and the 4 boys get the body. In the end Gordy convinces them to do the right thing and make an anonymous phone call.

Stand by me shows an adventurous and emotional trek into the complicated world of pre-teens mixed with the simple life of the mid-1900’s. It is a good film for anyone weather it be A Yr 9 class or even just a Family or Friends thing!
